Kawasaki recalls nearly 4,000 motorcycles: What to know

Kawasaki is recalling nearly 4,000 of its motorcycles in the U.S. over an issue with the clutch release shaft.

A recall report dated March 6 on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website warns that a broken clutch release lever "may not disengage, disabling the motorcycle and increasing the risk of a crash."

What we know:

Kawasaki Motors Corp. is recalling certain 2024 Ninja 500 (ABS, KRT Edition, KRT Edition SE ABS, SE ABS, SE 40th Anniversary Edition ABS), Z500 ABS, and Z500 SE ABS motorcycles. The clutch release shaft was not properly welded, which can cause the clutch lever to break apart, the recall notice said. 

By the numbers:

A total of 3,742 motorcycles have been recalled as part of the issue.

What's next:

Dealers will replace the clutch release shaft free of charge, according to the recall notice. Owner notification letters were expected to be mailed on March 24. Owners can contact Kawasaki Motors Corp customer service at 1-866-802-9381. The number for the recall is MC25-04.
