Watch: Bear gets inches away from boy eating popcorn in Aspen backyard

Video captured the moment a black bear snuck up behind a boy eating a snack in a backyard in Aspen, Colorado

The family had just spent the morning at the farmer’s market and Rachel Schmela said she purchased some kettle corn for her son.

He was sitting outside by a fire pit enjoying the snack when it happened.

Schmela said she saw the bear first but couldn’t see the fire pit from where she was standing.

"I said, 'Oh my gosh there's a bear in your backyard right now,’" she remembers saying to her family that she was visiting.

But then, she got a closer look.

"I screamed I think the loudest I've ever screamed, and then Rob and his brother, that's when they ran outside," she said to KDVR Denver

"I was more of, 'Oh my gosh, that just happened. Now let's go watch the video of it!'" Robert Schmela said.

As for their son, he was on his phone and didn’t realize the bear was just inches from his face.

"When he looked back, the bear was running away. So I don't think initially he knew how close the bear got to him and then when we watched the video, I think it sort of sunk in and I think he was just kind of like, quiet for a while," Rachel said.

Everyone was OK and agreed they wouldn’t be going outside anymore with kettle corn.
