Heads up to those who filed for a tax extension for the 2023 tax year: the deadline is on Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2024.

Taxpayers will need to file before the deadline in order to avoid possible late filing penalties. Tax payments can be made online, by phone, or on the IRS2Go app, the IRS said.

Here’s what to know:

What time is the tax filing deadline?

The deadline for most taxpayers to file is typically by midnight local time.

Can you get a tax extension beyond Oct. 15?

The tax filing extension deadline cannot be extended beyond the Oct. 15 deadline in most cases, with some exceptions – including those in disaster areas and military members.

There are also options for paying a tax bill for those who can’t afford it, including requesting an IRS payment plan.
