When it comes to Summer Olympic gold medals, some states have more bragging rights over others.
Overall, the United States has won the most Summer Olympic gold medals in the world with 2,635, dating back to the first Summer Games in 1896, according to The Sports Geek, citing data from the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

When analyzing the birthplace of each athlete, California has the most Olympic gold medals among the 50 U.S. states with 127.
Competitive swimmer Mark Spitz, a native of Modesto, California, helped build the state’s total, winning seven gold medals in the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. His achievements set a record at the time and weren't surpassed until fellow American Michael Phelps won eight golds at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.
New York comes in close behind with 70 gold medals at the Summer Games. Another swimmer, Ryan Lochte, was born in the Empire State and is the second-most decorated swimmer in Olympic history based on medal count, behind only Phelps.
With help from gymnastics star Simone Biles, Ohio ranks third for most gold medals at the Summer Games with 44 total. Biles was born in Columbus, Ohio, and later moved to Texas. She has earned seven Olympic medals, including four gold.

The Paris Summer Olympics 2024 could give U.S. states a chance to build their gold medal counts.
And this year, anticipation is running high after the 2020 Olympics were delayed thanks to the pandemic. The Summer Games did happen in 2021, but were a muted, rather depressing affair that largely took place in empty stadiums in Tokyo.
The Summer Games in Paris will kick off with the opening ceremony on Friday, July 26, and the Games go on until Sunday, Aug. 11, ending with the closing ceremony.
Roughly 105,000 athletes will be competing for a total of 329 gold medals across 32 sports. Breakdancing is making its debut, while skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing are notching their second Olympic appearance.
A total of 588 athletes will be representing the United States.

How to watch Paris Olympics 2024
NBCUniversal has been the exclusive U.S. broadcaster of the Olympic Games since 1988. Their current deal with the IOC extends to the 2032 Games.
Peacock will be streaming every event live, a first for the Games.
NBC will be showing at least nine hours of Olympic coverage every day, with a three-hour show featuring highlights, analysis and entertainment every evening.
