A significant gathering of leaders and family members honoring former President Jimmy Carter's legacy is expected at his state funeral service on Thursday.

Carter will lie in state in the Capitol Rotunda on Wednesday before his remains are moved in the morning to Washington National Cathedral for the 10 a.m. ceremony.

President Joe Biden will eulogize the former president at his funeral at the Washington National Cathedral on Thursday. Vice President Kamala Harris, who delivered a eulogy during the lying-in-state ceremony, is expected to attend. House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune are also expected to attend.

President-elect Donald Trump said he will attend the funeral of former President Carter. It is unclear if Trum has spoken to members of Carter’s family. Trump was a frequent critic of Carter on the campaign trail ahead of November’s election. He used the rising inflation rates of the 1970s to unfavorably compare Biden to Carter and his administration.

Former Presidents Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush are likely to be present. It is not clear if Michelle Obama, Laura Bush, or Hillary Rodham Clinton will attend.

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries are expected to attend in addition to cabinet members and members of Congress.

Supreme Court Justices, including Brett Kavanaugh and Elena Kagan, are expected, as is Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser.

It is unclear if first ladies Michelle Obama, Laura Bush, or Hillary Rodham Clinton will attend.

A Special Honor Guard – consisting of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Charles Q. Brown, Jr., Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Christopher W. Grady , Chief of Staff of the Army General Randy A. George, Commandant of the Marine Corps General Eric M. Smith, Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Lisa Franchetti, Chief of Staff of the Air Force General David W. Allvin, Chief of Space Operations General B. Chance Saltzman, Commandant of the Coast Guard Admiral Linda L. Fagan, Chief of the National Guard Bureau General Steven S. Nordhaus, or their representatives – are expected to participate in the ceremony.

President Carter’s children, John Carter, James Carter III, Donnel Carter, and Amy Carter Wentzel will be at the ceremony. Several of Carter’s many grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers.

After the service, Carter and his family will travel by motorcade to Joint Base Andrews, where they board Special Air Mission 39 bound for Fort Moore, Georgia.

They will arrive at Lawson Army Airfield in Fort Moore around 2 p.m., where Carter’s remains will travel by motorcade to Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia. A private funeral service will take place. After the funeral service, the late president and his family travel by motorcade to the Carter residence for a private interment.

President Carter and his wife Rosalynn Carter were married for 77 years, making them the longest married couple in presidential history. Jimmy and Rosalynn, who died in November 2023, had four children and over 20 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
